PUMPKIN CARVING IS RARELY THE SUCCESS YOU WANT IT TO BE

Some people are adept at carving faces or whatever else into pumpkins. They deftly wield the knife and showcase their talents. They make it look easy when in fact it requires a certain amount of concentration, skill and patience. The thing is, you have in mind this image of what you want your pumpkin to look like, but the result is rarely how you envisaged it to be.

It’s similar to baking. You see all these grandiose, multi-tiered cakes that people seem to bake with minimal effort, and yet you struggle to make a trivial little cupcake. You feel ashamed because you’ve failed to create what, in theory, should be easy.

Pumpkin carving is something you’re never going to master. There will always be someone you know, or someone who lives nearby, who’s a bona fide expert at the subtle art of fashioning faces and images into pumpkins. No matter how much time you spend on yours, no matter how much elbow grease goes into it, some gleeful so-and-so will have a much better, much more refined and intricately crafted creation proudly out on display for everyone to gape at and admire.

It’s messy too. A key part of the pumpkin-carving process is the act of removing the innards. Scooping out the rather stringy pulp isn’t the most pleasant of activities, but it has to be done if you want a shot at creating an impressive-looking carved pumpkin.

Is it worth the mess, hassle and stress? If I was skilful at it and my creations were of quality, I would gladly engage with the activity more. But as it stands, it’s a skill I don’t think I’ll ever perfect. I’ll stick with plastic ones instead.
